  • What ages do you start classes?
We begin classes: Tumbling at 18 months, assisted by a caregiver Dance at 2 years old. Every child is different when it comes to entering new activites in new enviroments with new people, let that sink in...as a tiny person it can be overwhelming and it's not uncommon for a child with any personality to be come overwhelmed. We ask that you stay calm, remember these are your little people and they want you to reassure them see you as their protector. Be patient it may take sometime for your child to warm up to the instructor, other children, the thought of being away from you, being part of an organized activity. This is all normal, if they refuse to participate here are some suggestions. For children four and over, we highly suggest you drop them at the door starting from the first class to establish that this is the process. It's much like going to school; liken it to that and remind them we have cameras that you will be watching them on; even tell them to be sure to waive or blow kisses when they are missing you, and you will return those back to them even if they can't see you they will imagine this. One of my favorite books that you can read before their first class is "A Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn, this story captures this very situation and how the little raccoon and mama raccoon deal with their separation. Instead of using phrases like 'it'll be okay' or 'I'll be back ', which can trigger separation anxiety, try encouraging phrases like 'I can't wait to see what you learn today' or 'after class, can you show/teach me what you've learned? '. These phrases can help shift the focus from separation to an exciting learning experience. If a child is hesitant to participate, "ask if they would like to watch the class and see what it's all about." Then our instructors can take them from there. Throughout class, if we have a student who does not want to participate for any reason, when we shift them to different activities, we will take a moment to re-invite them to join us. Sometimes, I even add a super fun activity that I know they will not be able to resist joining! If all else fails, enter the class, find a place out of the way to sign down, and watch the class with them; when you see activities that you have seen your child doing at home (jumping, spinning, forward rolling, etc.), say, "Hey, you can do that too, can't you." Or if you would like to join our class and have your child do things with you or watch you, that's okay too. Lastly, any activity should be presented in a positive and fun way for children. If a parent gets upset, the child will be upset, and they will associate the activity with a negative experience. If they aren't ready, try again in a few months. Let us know, and we will allow you another trial class. Hope this helps!
  • Which class should I enroll my child in?
For tumbling children 2 years, 11 months and under, please sign them up for a free trial in our Tumbling 1 class. https://app.jackrabbitclass.com/regv2.asp?id=544015&hc=&initEmpty=&hdrColor=&WL=0&preLoadClassID=16233452&loc= For tumbling children 3 years and older, you will need to sign them up for an assessment. The coach will conduct an assessment of your child's skills and determine the level best for them to start out in. We are a skill based program, tumblers must meet all skill requirements at their specific level to move to the next level, students that have the most success regularly attend classes and most often are enrolled in multiple classes. https://app.jackrabbitclass.com/eventcalendar.asp?orgID=544015 For dance, our classes are designated by age 2-3.5, 3.5-5, 4.5-6, 7-10, 11+ we ask that you follow these guidelines. If your child is three years, four months, please put them in the 2-3.5 class. If the instructors feel that your child is dancing above the level that they are placed in then we will have that discussion with you to determine what level they will be placed in or moved to. Please look on our website under the programs menu and select "Dance" to see the class descriptions for each age/level. Here at Spark, we believe that dance and tumbling are not seasonal sports; for that reason, we run a year-round dance program; students are either advanced up based on their age or earlier based on their technique, skill, and memorization. Between January and June, we do not move dance students; at this time of the year, dancers begin learning recital choreography. Each choreographer creates the routines with each dancer in mind. We ask that each dancer is committed to attending their regular classes to ensure that the recital is a positive and successful experience for all involved.

  • What if my child won't participate?
As a parent, it's important to remember that every child is different when it comes to entering new activities in new environments with new people. It can be overwhelming for a child with any personality to be introduced to new experiences. It's normal for them to feel anxious or apprehensive. Therefore, we ask that you stay calm and remember that your little ones want you to reassure them and see you as their protector. Be patient with your child, as it may take some time for them to warm up to the instructor, other children, the thought of being away from you, or being part of an organized activity. If they refuse to participate, there are some suggestions that you can follow. The first step is to get them comfortable in the environment they are in. You can ask if they would like to sit and watch the class if they are not willing to participate. Bring their favorite toy or stuffed animal with them. You can suggest that they take it with them or show it how to do the "moves". Eventually, the toy can sit and watch them. If you see the children in class doing activities that your child has done at home, you can say things like "You can do that, can't you?" or "I bet you can do that, can't you?" Follow it up with "Do you want to give it a try?" You may have to stand next to them in the room/gym, encourage them, and/or demonstrate. However, we do not recommend assisting in tumbling skills without direction from the coach. It can take 4-6 weeks for some children to participate in class. If we feel that we are not making ANY progress in that time, then it is probably not the right time for your child to start this activity and you should try again in six months. If a child is what I call "screaming crying" and is inconsolable, this is a sign that you need to remove them from the situation to a quieter location. Additionally, it is difficult for the instructor to communicate over the sound to the other students, and it's not uncommon for the other students to become upset or frightened. Our ultimate goal is to enable children to participate independently in activities in all of our classes. We instruct children by teaching them skills, techniques, and vocabulary in every program. During the class, they learn to follow directions by listening, wait their turn by being patient, take turns by sharing, and use their words by effectively communicating. In between classes, we encourage them to socialize with other children to improve their social skills and put away their personal belongings in the designated storage spaces. We also teach them to change shoes, put on their coats and backpacks independently.
  • Can I watch the class?
We offer a live streaming service to log into and watch your child in their class. You can sign up through the parent portal once enrolled in a class (after your trial class). Due to the limited space in the dance studio, parents can drop dancers off and pick them up from our entrance door. There is no lobby; it is a dancer waiting area. The chairs are for dancers to change shoes, store their bags/jackets, and take breaks between classes. If your child is under 4 years old, you are welcome to stay on site if you feel they need assistance using the restroom. However, we kindly ask that no other children or siblings be in the waiting area during classes. This is to ensure a distraction-free environment for our students and staff members. In these situations, we request that you wait in your car.
